The wall behind the stone must be non-combustible — specify calcium silicate board (12mm for gas inserts, 18mm for wood-burning fireplaces) rated for continuous exposure above 200°C. Verify the substrate is plumb and flat; deviations over 3mm create stress points.

Measure the actual opening at multiple points — fireplaces often deviate 10-20mm from drawings. Create a template from rigid cardboard, marking exact dimensions and obstructions. Send the template to Apexstone before fabrication to eliminate on-site cutting.

Install stainless steel Z-clips or angle brackets for mechanical anchoring — adhesive alone cannot support stone weight under thermal expansion. For hearth slabs, prepare a level mortar bed (10-15mm thick) with stainless steel mesh reinforcement if spanning over 1.2 meters.

Inspect every piece before installation. Document damage within 48 hours — claims become difficult once stone is set.
